Signs Your Car Might Need Professional Engine Repair Service at Weldon's Auto Center

Your vehicle's engine is the heart of your car, and keeping it in top condition is crucial for a smooth and safe driving experience. At Weldon's Auto Center in Ada, OK, we understand that engine problems can be daunting, especially if you're unsure what to look out for. In this post, we’ll explore the telltale signs that your car might need engine repair. Whether you’re a seasoned driver or a new car owner, this guide is designed to help you recognize early warning signs and take proactive steps to keep your vehicle running efficiently.

           1. Strange Noises Under the Hood

One of the most common signs that your engine might need attention is unusual noises coming from under the hood. These could include knocking, tapping, or grinding sounds, all of which could indicate different issues:

            Knocking Sounds

: Often, a knocking noise is a sign of worn-out engine bearings. This could be due to insufficient lubrication or simply the age of your engine. If you hear this noise, it's essential to have it checked out immediately at Weldon's Auto Center in Ada, OK, to prevent further damage.

            Tapping or Clicking Sounds

: A tapping noise might indicate that your engine's oil level is low, or it could be a sign of an issue with the engine's valve train. Checking your oil levels regularly can help avoid this problem, but if the noise persists, it’s time to bring your vehicle to our shop.

           2. Decreased Engine Performance

Has your car’s performance taken a sudden nosedive? If you notice that your vehicle is struggling to accelerate, or if it’s not as responsive as it used to be, these could be signs of engine trouble:

            Loss of Power

: A noticeable loss of power, especially when driving uphill or carrying heavy loads, could indicate a problem with your engine’s compression or a malfunctioning fuel system. Our experienced mechanics at Weldon's Auto Center can diagnose and fix these issues efficiently.

            Poor Fuel Efficiency

: If your car is burning through gas faster than usual, it could be due to a variety of engine problems, including faulty spark plugs, clogged air filters, or fuel injector issues. Regular maintenance and timely repairs at our Ada location can help you save money at the pump.

           3. Warning Lights on the Dashboard

Modern vehicles are equipped with advanced diagnostic systems that alert you to potential problems via dashboard warning lights. If you see the check engine light or any other warning lights, it’s crucial to address the issue promptly:

            Check Engine Light

: This light could be triggered by a range of issues, from a loose gas cap to more serious engine problems. While it might be tempting to ignore it if the car seems to be running fine, we strongly recommend bringing your vehicle to Weldon's Auto Center in Ada, OK, for a diagnostic check.

            Oil Pressure Warning Light

: This light indicates that your engine’s oil pressure is too low, which could lead to severe engine damage if not addressed quickly. Ensuring your oil is at the correct level and getting regular oil changes can help avoid this issue.

           4. Excessive Exhaust Smoke

While some exhaust smoke is normal, especially during cold starts, excessive smoke of certain colors can indicate engine trouble:

            Blue Smoke

: This typically means that your engine is burning oil, which could be due to worn valve seals or piston rings. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention.

            White Smoke

: If you see white smoke, it could be a sign of a coolant leak, often indicating a blown head gasket or a cracked engine block. Both of these are serious problems that require professional repair.

            Black Smoke

: Black smoke suggests that your engine is burning too much fuel, which could be due to a clogged air filter, faulty fuel injectors, or a malfunctioning sensor. Addressing this problem quickly can prevent further damage and improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

           5. Engine Stalling or Rough Idling

If your car stalls frequently or idles roughly, it could be a sign of engine trouble:

            Stalling

: This might happen when your car comes to a stop or when you’re trying to accelerate. It could be caused by a variety of issues, including fuel system problems, ignition issues, or a malfunctioning sensor. Our team at Weldon's Auto Center can diagnose the root cause and perform the necessary repairs.

            Rough Idling

: If your car is idling roughly or if it feels like it might stall, it could be due to a problem with the engine’s air-fuel mixture, ignition system, or other critical components. Don’t let this issue persist—bring your vehicle to our Ada location for an expert diagnosis.

           6. Unusual Smells

Strange smells can also be a sign that something is wrong with your engine:

            Burning Oil Smell

: If you notice a strong burning oil smell, it could mean that your engine is leaking oil onto hot engine parts. This is a fire hazard and should be addressed immediately.

            Sweet Smell

: A sweet smell could indicate a coolant leak, which could lead to your engine overheating if not repaired. This is often a sign of a serious issue like a blown head gasket.

            Gasoline Smell

: If you smell gasoline inside your car, it could mean that there’s a leak in your fuel system. This is not only a sign of engine trouble but also a safety risk.

           7. Fluid Leaks

Visible fluid leaks under your car are never a good sign. Different types of leaks indicate different problems:

            Oil Leaks

: Oil leaks can lead to low oil levels, which can cause engine damage. If you see dark brown or black puddles under your car, it’s time to visit Weldon's Auto Center.

            Coolant Leaks

: A green, orange, or pink fluid leak could mean that your engine’s cooling system has a problem. Addressing coolant leaks promptly can prevent your engine from overheating.

            Transmission Fluid Leaks

: While not directly related to the engine, transmission fluid leaks can lead to engine strain. If you see red or brown fluid under your car, it’s essential to get it checked out.

           8. Engine Overheating

Finally, if your engine overheats, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong. An overheating engine can cause severe damage, so it’s crucial to take immediate action:

            Overheating Causes

: Common causes include a faulty thermostat, a failing water pump, or low coolant levels. Regular maintenance, including coolant flushes, can help prevent overheating.

As vehicles have evolved, so too has the technology that keeps them running smoothly. One key advancement is the introduction of onboard diagnostic systems, known as OBD. These systems provide critical insights into your vehicle’s health, alerting you to potential issues before they become serious problems. But how do you make sense of those cryptic diagnostic codes that your car throws at you? At Weldon’s Auto Center in Ada, OK, we’re here to help you decode these messages and keep your car in top shape.

What Are Automotive Diagnostic Codes and Why Are They Important?

Diagnostic codes are a part of your vehicle’s OBD system, which monitors various components of your car, including the engine, transmission, exhaust systems, and more. When something goes wrong, your car’s computer generates a diagnostic trouble code (DTC), which is stored in its memory. This code can then be read using a diagnostic tool, revealing what’s wrong with the vehicle.

Understanding these codes is crucial because they can help you identify issues early, potentially saving you from costly repairs. At Weldon’s Auto Center, we specialize in interpreting these codes, ensuring that Ada drivers get accurate diagnostics and efficient service.

Common Diagnostic Codes and What They Mean

While there are thousands of possible codes, some are more common than others. Here are a few you might encounter:

            P0300 – Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

: This code indicates that your engine is misfiring randomly across multiple cylinders. It’s a serious issue that can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. At Weldon’s Auto Center, we have the expertise to pinpoint the cause, whether it’s a spark plug issue, fuel injector problem, or something else.

P0420 – Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

: This code suggests that your catalytic converter isn’t working as efficiently as it should be. This could be due to a failed oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or a faulty catalytic converter. Our team in Ada will perform a thorough inspection to determine the root cause and recommend the best course of action.

            P0171 – System Too Lean (Bank 1)

: If your engine is running too lean, meaning it’s getting too much air and not enough fuel, this code will appear. It could be caused by a vacuum leak, faulty fuel injectors, or a bad mass air flow sensor. At Weldon’s Auto Center, we’ll ensure your engine is running at the optimal fuel-air ratio.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Diagnostic Codes

Ignoring diagnostic codes is one of the most common mistakes car owners make. These codes are your vehicle’s way of telling you something is wrong, and ignoring them can lead to more serious issues down the road. For example, a simple misfire could eventually lead to engine failure if not addressed. That’s why we at Weldon’s Auto Center recommend bringing your car in as soon as a warning light appears on your dashboard.

Our team in Ada, OK, uses state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to accurately read and interpret these codes, ensuring that we can identify and fix the problem quickly. By addressing these issues early, you can avoid costly repairs and keep your vehicle running smoothly.

            Comprehensive Inspection

: Once we have the codes, we’ll perform a thorough inspection of the affected systems. This may involve checking sensors, examining wiring, testing components, and more.

At Weldon's Auto Center in Ada, OK, we understand how much your vehicle means to you. Whether it's your daily commuter, weekend getaway car, or family vehicle, maintaining its health is essential for ensuring it runs smoothly for years to come. One of the simplest yet most crucial aspects of vehicle maintenance is regular oil changes. While it might seem like a routine task, the impact of timely oil changes on your car's longevity cannot be overstated.

The Importance of Regular Oil Changes

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It lubricates the engine's moving parts, reduces friction, and helps to keep the engine cool. Over time, however, engine oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dust, dirt, and debris from the engine and the environment. This can lead to the oil losing its effectiveness, which puts your engine at risk.

At Weldon’s Auto Center, we’ve seen firsthand the consequences of neglecting this simple maintenance task. Engines that run on old or insufficient oil often suffer from increased wear and tear, overheating, and, in severe cases, complete engine failure. Regular oil changes help to prevent these issues, keeping your engine clean and well-lubricated, which ultimately extends the life of your vehicle.

How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

The frequency of oil changes depends on various factors, including the type of oil used, the age and model of your car, and your driving habits. A common recommendation is to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but modern engines and synthetic oils have extended this interval to 7,500 or even 10,000 miles in some cases.

At Weldon’s Auto Center in Ada, OK, we recommend consulting your vehicle's owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s guidance and talking to our experienced technicians. We’ll consider your specific driving conditions, such as frequent short trips, towing, or driving in extreme temperatures, to tailor the best oil change schedule for your vehicle.

The Benefits of Regular Oil Changes at Weldon’s Auto Center in Ada, OK

           1. Improved Engine Performance

When you keep up with regular oil changes, your engine remains clean and operates more efficiently. Clean oil provides better lubrication, which allows engine parts to move with less resistance. This results in smoother engine performance and better fuel economy.

           2. Prolonged Engine Life

Old, dirty oil is one of the leading causes of engine wear. Regular oil changes at Weldon’s Auto Center help remove contaminants that can cause damage to your engine over time. By ensuring your engine is always running on clean oil, you significantly reduce the risk of wear and corrosion, helping your engine last longer.

           3. Better Fuel Efficiency

Dirty oil causes your engine to work harder, which can decrease fuel efficiency. By maintaining clean oil, you reduce friction and improve the engine's overall performance, leading to better gas mileage. This means fewer trips to the pump and more money saved over time.

           4. Reduced Emissions

Engines that run on old, dirty oil tend to burn more oil, leading to increased exhaust emissions. Regular oil changes help your engine burn fuel more efficiently, reducing the amount of harmful emissions released into the environment. This not only helps your car pass emissions tests but also contributes to a cleaner, greener planet.

           5. Early Detection of Potential Issues

One critical aspect of vehicle maintenance that often gets overlooked is brake repair. At Weldon's Auto Center, we believe in empowering our community with knowledge about brake repair costs and maintenance to keep you safe on the road. In this comprehensive guide, we'll break down everything you need to know about brake repair, costs, and how to make informed decisions about your vehicle's braking system.

Understanding the Basics of Brake Repair

Before diving into the costs, it’s essential to understand what brake repair entails. Your car’s braking system is composed of several components that work together to ensure safe stopping power. These include brake pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid. Over time, these parts wear out and need replacement or repair.

Brake Pads: These are the most frequently replaced components. Brake pads create friction against the rotors to slow down or stop the vehicle.

Rotors: These are the discs that the brake pads press against. They can become warped or worn down and may need resurfacing or replacement.

Calipers: These squeeze the brake pads against the rotors. Calipers can become stuck or leak brake fluid, requiring repair or replacement.

Brake Fluid: This hydraulic fluid transfers force from the brake pedal to the brake components. It needs to be topped up or replaced periodically.

           Factors Influencing Brake Repair Costs

Several factors affect the cost of brake repair, and it’s essential to be aware of these to budget accordingly. Here are some key factors:

Type of Vehicle: Different vehicles have different braking systems, and the cost can vary significantly between compact cars, trucks, and luxury vehicles.

Quality of Parts: The cost of brake pads, rotors, and other components can vary based on their quality. Opting for high-quality parts can be more expensive initially but may save money in the long run due to their durability.

Labor Costs: Labor rates can vary depending on the shop’s location and the expertise of the mechanics. At Weldon's Auto Center in Ada, OK, we provide competitive rates and skilled service.

Extent of Damage: If you wait too long to repair your brakes, you might end up needing more extensive and expensive repairs.

           Signs You Need Brake Repair

Knowing when to get your brakes checked can save you from costly repairs and ensure your safety. Here are some common signs that you might need brake repair:

Squeaking or Squealing Noises: Often indicate that your brake pads are worn and need replacement.

Grinding Sound: This suggests that the brake pads are completely worn out, and the metal parts are grinding against the rotors.

Vibration When Braking: Can be a sign of warped rotors that need resurfacing or replacement.

Soft Brake Pedal: If your brake pedal feels spongy or sinks to the floor, it could indicate a brake fluid leak or air in the brake lines.

Pulling to One Side: This can be caused by uneven brake pad wear or issues with the calipers.

The Importance of a Well-Functioning Compressor

The compressor is often referred to as the "heart" of the air conditioning system. It plays a critical role in cooling your vehicle by compressing the refrigerant and circulating it through the AC system. A malfunctioning compressor can lead to a lack of cooling efficiency, or worse, complete system failure. Regular checks and maintenance are crucial to prevent discomfort and costly repairs down the line.

           Signs You Need Compressor Repair

Recognizing the early signs of compressor failure can save you time and money. Here are key symptoms that Ada residents should watch out for:

            Unusual Noises:

If you hear rattling or clicking sounds when your AC is turned on, it could indicate a problem with the compressor.

            Reduced Cooling:

If the air blowing through your vents isn’t as cold as usual, this might be a sign that your compressor isn’t functioning properly.

            Tripping Circuit Breaker:

When the AC causes your car’s circuit breaker to trip, it’s often due to an overworking compressor drawing too much power.

DIY Tips for Maintaining Your AC System

While professional maintenance is key, there are several things you can do on your own to help extend the life of your car's AC system:

            Run It Regularly:

Even in cooler months, run your AC for about 10 minutes once a week to keep the system lubricated and maintain the seals.

            Keep It Clean:

Regularly check and replace the cabin air filter to ensure optimal airflow and cooling efficiency.

            Be Observant:

Keep an eye on your AC’s performance and bring your vehicle in at the first sign of trouble.

Understanding Your Vehicle’s A/C System

Before we delve into common A/C issues and solutions, let's break down how your vehicle’s air conditioning system works. In essence, your car’s A/C system operates by compressing and expanding refrigerant, which, in turn, cools the air before it’s blown into the cabin. The system comprises several key components: the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator.

When functioning correctly, this system provides a comfortable, cool environment inside your vehicle, making those hot summer drives around Ada, OK, much more bearable. However, when something goes awry, it can turn your comfortable commute into a sweltering ordeal.

Common A/C Problems and How We Fix Them at Weldon's Auto Center

At Weldon's Auto Center, we've seen it all when it comes to A/C issues. Here are some common problems and how our team of experienced technicians tackles them:

           1. Refrigerant Leaks

One of the most frequent causes of a malfunctioning A/C system is a refrigerant leak. This can occur due to wear and tear on the hoses and seals. At Weldon's Auto Center, we use advanced diagnostic tools to detect leaks and repair them, ensuring your A/C system is recharged and ready to provide maximum cooling efficiency.

           2. Faulty Compressor

The compressor is the heart of your vehicle’s A/C system. If your A/C is blowing warm air or not working at all, a faulty compressor could be to blame. Our technicians at Weldon's Auto Center in Ada, OK, can assess your compressor’s condition and recommend the best course of action, whether it's a repair or a full replacement.

           3. Clogged Condenser

The condenser cools the refrigerant after compression. However, it can become clogged with debris and dirt, impairing its ability to cool effectively. Our team is adept at cleaning and repairing condensers, ensuring that air flows freely and your car stays cool, even on the hottest Ada days.

           4. Electrical Issues

Modern vehicles come with complex electrical systems that can affect your A/C. At Weldon's Auto Center, we specialize in diagnosing and fixing electrical issues, from blown fuses to malfunctioning sensors, to keep your car's A/C running smoothly.

: Regularly check the area around the air intake (typically located at the base of the windshield) and remove any leaves or debris.

           Schedule Regular Check-ups

is paramount to ensuring your safety on the road. Here are five simple tips to keep your vehicle running smoothly this holiday season.

5 Vehicle Maintenance Tips for the Winter

           1. Replace Your Wiper Blades

Did you know that even the highest-quality wiper blades can start to lose their effectiveness even

           after just six months

? Additionally, as the weather gets colder, it can impact your wipers in a few ways. You might notice that the wiper blades become bent or the wiper arms start to skip. Getting a new set of wiper blades can be a smart move to ensure your peace of mind as the temperatures start to drop.

           2. Check Your Battery

Cold conditions may shorten the life of a vehicle battery

           by up to 50%

. Reduced capacity and higher drain from starting motors and accessories are some primary contributing factors that lead to batteries dying in the winter.

Inspect your battery terminals and wires for cracks, loose connections, and any debris or residue to make sure your battery is ready to go for the winter. And, as part of your scheduled vehicle maintenance, have the battery checked and replaced if necessary.

           3. Warm Up Your Vehicle

Ensure optimal performance of your vehicle during the winter by avoiding extended periods of inactivity. To ensure your engine stays warm, it’s a good idea to run it for brief intervals. However, it is important to avoid warming up your vehicle in your garage, even if the door is open. Warming up your car in the garage can expose you to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Here are some precautions you can take:

Before you start your vehicle, make sure to open the garage door.

Start the vehicle and carefully reverse it out of the garage right away.

Ventilate the space by leaving the garage door open.

           4. Check Your Tires

Tread depth plays a significant role in determining how well tires perform. As tires age, their tread gradually wears down, which can lead to decreased traction on wet, cold, or frosted surfaces. To make sure your driving experience is at its best and, most importantly, to keep you safe on the road, vehicle maintenance with your tires is crucial.

If you haven’t heard of this timeless trick before, here’s a handy way to check your tire tread: simply take a penny and insert it into the groove of your tire. If you can clearly see the entire head of Lincoln on a penny when you insert it into your tire’s tread, then your tread depth is less than 2/32”, and it’s time to consider getting new tires.

           5. Change Your Oil and Check Other Fluids

Some changes may occur in your car’s fluids when the temperature drops low enough. Antifreeze, transmission fluid, and motor oil are just a few examples of fluids that may thicken and move more slowly in colder temperatures. Unfortunately, this might make it difficult to start the engine or cause regular driving to seem sluggish.

In the winter, switching from conventional oil to a synthetic blend is highly recommended, especially for older vehicles. Make sure to inspect, change, or top off all of your other fluids as part of your overall winter vehicle maintenance.

. This warning is indicated by the engine symbol on your dashboard lighting up red, orange, amber, or yellow. The cause of an illuminated engine light might be as simple as a loose gas cap or as complex as a damaged engine component. However, ignoring the problem can quickly lead to expensive repairs or inevitable vehicle failure. Here are five of the most common causes of a check engine light and what you should do in the event that it comes on.

5 Common Culprits of a Check Engine Light

           1. Loose Gas Cap

Your gas cap helps to maintain the right pressure in your vehicle’s fuel delivery system and prevents vapors from escaping the fuel tank. When it is loose or missing, it may trigger a check engine light.

           2. Oxygen Sensor Failure

If your vehicle’s oxygen sensor is malfunctioning, it won’t be able to determine how much oxygen is present in the exhaust, which means your vehicle won’t be able to deliver the correct amount of gasoline to your engine. If your engine is otherwise healthy, your vehicle may still continue to operate, but with

           3. Battery Issues

A faulty or incorrectly installed battery can prevent your vehicle from starting and trigger a check engine light. Generally, vehicle batteries need to be replaced every three to five years, but exposure to harsh driving conditions and severe weather can negatively affect their lifespan.

           4. Vacuum Hose Leaks

Age and exposure to extreme temperatures can cause vacuum hoses to dry out and crack, resulting in leaks. When this happens, the engine warning light may turn on. In addition, if your vehicle’s idle speed suddenly rises or stays at an irregularly high

           5. Damaged Spark Plugs

A vehicle’s ignition system sends electric currents to spark plugs, which in turn send those currents directly to the combustion chamber, lighting the fuel-air mixture responsible for driving the vehicle. When a spark plug fails, it may cause the engine to misfire, reduce gas mileage, cause rough idling, and trigger the check engine light.

What to Do When Your Check Engine Light Turns On

While some check engine light issues can be resolved with simple troubleshooting, several others may be signs of serious engine failure and call for meticulous and in-depth professional repairs. If your gas cap, battery, and fuel levels are fine, but your engine warning light is still on, it’s worth consulting with a professional mechanic to avoid the risk of causing further damage to your vehicle and putting yourself in danger.

What You Need To Know About Coolant

What do you know about coolant? Much like oil, it needs to have its own maintenance schedule to keep it from damaging your car.

Do you know when is the best time to change your engine coolant? Most cars on the road need theirs changed every 30,000 miles but this varies by model. If you’re a car owner you should know when your car needs its coolant changed, why, and how.

Most auto dealers will sell you a long-life coolant which is a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water to protect the radiator from hot summers and freezing winters. This mix allows you to keep driving with almost no regular maintenance because now the car has longer intervals between changes. Many auto shops will recommend a fluid change every 30,000-50,000 miles. Depending on what kind of coolant you use and what your mechanic recommends, this number can change.

So, why do you need it changed? Well, coolant will deteriorate over time. Unlike oil, it is a little harder to test by appearances. Your car can even tell you that the reservoir is sufficiently full but an antifreeze flush might be needed.

When deteriorating, coolant can become acidic and cause corrosion. The corrosion will overtake the radiator, thermostat, and your heating/cooling system.

This can prove fatal for your engine because if it stops your car from maintaining proper temperatures you will have an overheating problem.

Determining when your coolant is outdated is difficult which is why you should take your car in to get tested by a professional. Allow a mechanic to look for signs of corrosion, rust, and test your heating/cooling system. If they find corrosion and deterioration, the antifreeze coolant should be changed. Your mechanic will also go ahead and flush your coolant to remove contaminants. If you need a trusted car expert consider bringing your car into Weldon’s.

Proper Tire Maintenance

Have you started your annual car maintenance?

There are many things you should check on whenever a new year rolls around, and one of the most important checks are the ones for your tires.
Having the proper tire pressure is crucial to safety. Only second to the brakes, the tires are the most important safety devices of your car.

The more you drive the more wear and tear your tires experience, and you will have to eventually replace them. The important thing is knowing when you need to get new tires. Here are several signs to look out for when considering how much life is left in your tires.

           Treads

Smooth tires won’t do. Treadless tires are a sign that you need to have them replaced. New tires have deep grooves that are worn down over time and have no grip to where they become smooth. You need these grips to keep your car from slipping when faced with a threat. Threats on the road such as rain, ice, and potholes can take you off course with little control.

On top of losing traction, worn treads are also at risk of popping when they come in contact with road debris.

           Testing Your Tires

If you don’t know whether or not your treads are worn enough to get your tires changed, try the classic penny test! Take the coin and insert the coin into a tread groove. Use Lincoln’s face on the coin as a unit of measurement as you slip it downwards into the grooves. Then, if the tread ridge hides part of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is still in good shape. If Lincoln’s head is still visible, your tread is worn and ready for replacing.

When It’s Time For New Tires

Rubber can last forever but that doesn’t mean tires do. When purchasing tires, you may find that most manufacturers offer tread wear guarantees of 60,000 miles. However, they highly recommend replacing your tires every 6 to 10 years. Check your expiration date regularly to make sure you’re not driving on old tires!
